Samajwadi Party demands hike of sunstroke death damage to Rs 1.5L

Bhubaneswar: The Samajwadi Party State committee on Tuesday
demanded enhancement of compensation amount for sunstroke and heat wave victims
from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh.
In a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik party State
committee president Rabi Behera urged him to consider the issue as soon as
possible. The Chief Minister may seek the permission of Election Commission on
India if necessary to this effect.
“This year almost 15 towns in the State have recorded more
than 400 centigrade and till now 17 sunstroke deaths have been received by the Special
Relief Commissioner (SRC). This figure may increase in May and June,” said
Behera.
Behera further stated that the 13th Finance Commission has
recommended an amount of Rs 1 lakh for the sunstroke victims. The State
Government is paying Rs 1.5 lakh to the victims of lightning, Tornado,
whirlwind and so also boat-tragedy victims out of the Chief Ministers Relief
Fund. But in case of sunstroke deaths the compensation amount is only Rs 10,000.
