’61 cases pending against Sabyasachi’

Bhubaneswar: At least 61 cases, including the murder of Swami
Lakshmanananda Saraswati and Nayagarh armoury loot case, are pending against
Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda alias Sunil, who was arrested in Badabazar area
in Berhampur in Ganjam district late on Thursday night, informed Odisha
Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjiv Marik.

Briefing mediapersons, the DGP said, “Panda is involved in as
many as 61 cases. While 21 cases are pending against him in Rayagada district,
25 in Gajapati district, nine in Nayagarh district, two in Ganjam district and
one in Berhampur.”
Stating that Sabyasachi was carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on
his head Marik said that he was behind the killing of 25 security personnel and
34 common people in the State.
“He was arrested from Badabazaar area of Berhampur town at
around 1 am from a house. A joint team of Berhampur police and intelligence
personnel nabbed him. One revolver, 10 mobile phones, one laptop, 500 grams of
gold, two hard discs and five pen drives, besides Rs 2 lakh in cash were
recovered from his possession,” the DGP stated.
Sabyasachi was active in the “Maoist Movement” in the State
for more than two decades. He was the guiding spirit behind formation of Chasi
Mulia Samiti and Kui Lawenga Sangha in 1995 in Rayagada and Gajapati districts.
Both these organizations were the foundations for spreading Maoist network in
those areas.
He was the founder of Bansadhara and Ghumusur Divisions of
Odisha State Committee (OSC) and the Secretary of Odisha State Organizing
Committee (OSOC) of CPI (Maoist) till 2012. He was operating in Southern Odisha
including the districts of Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal and Nayagarh.
Sabyasachi Panda was involved in numerous sensational cases
like the Nayagarh and R. Udayagiri armoury loot, killing of Swami Laxmananand
Saraswati, abduction of two Italian nationals and blowing up of ambulance in
Kandhamal besides overall involvement in killing of 25 security personnel and
34 civilians.
