Odisha launches pilgrimage for senior citizens

Berhampur, July 25: Chief
Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday launched tour programme for
senior citizens from Berhampur railway station. Pilgrims would tour from
Berhampur to Rameshwaram and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
 

In the first phase of
the programme, a total of 977 pilgrims from across 10 districts boarded the train
for Rameshwaram and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
In the 2014 election
manifesto, the BJD had promised to provide one-time financial assistance to
senior citizens for pilgrimage to different religious destinations in the country.
Under the scheme, the Government
would bear the entire tour expenditure of devotees including travel,
accommodation and medical expenses, sources said.
The three-month tour
programme will begin from July every year.
The first
State-sponsored pilgrimage scheme for senior citizens was launched at the
railway station here after CM flagged off a special train for the purpose.  
As many as four
platoons of police were deployed at the railway station for the safety and
security of the Chief Minister’s visit.
