Bhubaneswar,
Sep 4: A road in the capital city here was named after Mother Teresa marking Teresa’s
canonisation as a saint on The Vatican.
Chief
Minister Naveen Patnaik dedicated the fly-over road linking Satya Nagar and
Cuttack-Puri road in her memory.
“Henceforth,
the road will be known as Saint Mother Teresa Road,” said Patnaik.
Terming Teresa
as an angel to the distressed and the diseased, Patnaik said, “She has got many
awards from many countries including Bharat Ratna,   Nobel Peace Prize and her beatification as
‘The Blessed’.  And finally, the
Sainthood comes to her today.   But the
awards and recognitions never mattered to her.”
He urged
people to take a leaf from her book of compassion and service, and work for the
poor and distressed.
“She came to
Kolkata after listening to the ‘call within the call’.  In 1950 she established missionaries of
charity in Kolkata and since then her message of love, compassion and service
have reached millions across the globe. Hundreds of centres around the world are
now in the service of the poorest of the poor. She was an angel to the
distressed and the diseased,” said Patnaik.
Maintaining
that all through her life Mother Teresa has served the un-served, Patnaik said
she was the quintessence of compassion.
The decision
to name the road after Mother Teresa was taken by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation
at the request of Odisha Catholic Bishops’ Council (OCBC) last month.
Housing and
Urban Development Minister Pushpendra Singh Deo, Bhubaneswar MLAs, Bijay
Mohanty and Priyadarshi Mishra, BMC Mayor Anant Narayan Jena and
Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Archbishop Chairman John Barwa were present.
In Odisha,
Missionaries of Charity, the organisation created by Mother Teresa, has 18
houses.
She had
first visited Bhubaneswar in 1974 and met the then Chief Minister Nandini
Satpathy.
