Crorepati doctor couple nabbed for prescribing counterfeit cancer drugs

Cuttack, Sep 16: Almost
a month after a Disproportionate Assets (DA) case was registered against them, Vigilance
sleuth on Friday arrested a doctor couple working at Government-run Acharya
Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC) on charges of corruption.
Vigilance sleuths said
that the doctor couple Dr Surendranath Senapati and his wife Dr Diptirani
Samanta had allegedly amassed ill gotten money to the tune of Rs 3.8 crore through
unfair means.
While Senapati was the
professor in the department of radiation oncology his wife Samanta works as an
assistant professor in department of medical oncology at the AHRCC.
They were booked under
various Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and sent to Choudwar
circle Jail, Cuttack after Special Vigilance Court rejected their bail pleas.
During raid on August
8 by the anti-corruption wing, at least Rs 14 lakh cash, bank deposits worth Rs
34.51 lakh, insurance policies of Rs 23.59 lakh and gold and diamond ornaments
worth Rs 43.85 lakh was detected in the house.
The Vigilance raids action came
after it received certain specific allegations that the doctor couple prescribed poor quality cancer medicines of certain specific brands, which are much costly than regular
medicines of branded companies, to poor patients visiting AHRCC and in return they received huge
monetary benefits from the medicine companies and even visited foreign countries
with their  supports.
