Maheswata Ray, a versatile artist, has been dazzling the screen for some years now with her acting talent. She has turned a screen-idol for the audience who crowd the theatre if the film has just her on its cast. She has proved that she can play a wide variety of roles and equally mesmerise the viewers.

Ray, one of the most acclaimed actors and the leading lady of Odia cinema, has worked in nearly 100 Odia films and several films in Bengali other languages. She made her debut in ‘Sesha Shrabana’ in 1976 and bagged state film awards for best actress several times earlier.

Born on July 2, 1962 in Puri, she studied at the Samant Chandra Sekhar College. She is actively associated with the Odia film industry, doing some character roles and some tele-serials. Ray, one of the acclaimed actors of Odia film industry, has worked in Bengali films too.

She had ruffled feathers in the industry by questioning the choices of the jury members of the 28th State Films Awards. Ray, who was awarded the ‘Best Performing Actress Award’ for her performance in ‘Dele Dhara Katha Sare’, questioned she had expected an award for her other film ‘Chini’.

The 55-year-old actor made her debut in ‘Sesha Shrabana’ in 1976.

On February 12, 2018, the veteran Odia actor joined the BJP after being influenced by the ideology of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
