Farmers’ strike hits normal life in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Normal life across Odisha was affected on Thursday due to a dawn-to-dusk bandh called by Nabnirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS), a leading farmers’ organisation in the State, to protest against the State Government’s alleged apathetic attitude towards their demands.

The strike was supported by both the Congress and the BJP. No untoward incident happened during the day-long agitation.

However, police picked up about 200 protesters from different parts of the State, including 70 from Bhubaneswar.

Though Government offices were remained opened, educational institutions, major shops and business establishments remained closed. Public transport vehicles were off the roads.

The NNKS is demanding proper minimum support rice on paddy, prestige and pension for the farmers in the form of social security allowance of Rs 5,000 per month.
