Railways to introduce Real Time Information System by March next year

Bhubaneswar: Railway Board Chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav on Sunday informed that all the train engines will be fitted with global positioning system (GPS) by the end of the current financial year to know real time position of the trains.

Yadav, who visited Bhubaneswar to take stock of the performance of the East Coast Railway (ECoR), along with Railway Board General Manager Vidya Bhusan, said the facility will operate on Real Time Information System (RTIS).

He said the Railway has developed e-dristi.in website for the improvement in providing information on train position and hygienic catering served in trains. E-catering app by IRCTC will help the passengers to booked foods of different brands while travelling in train.

“Indian Railway is working to improve train punctuality. All the engine of will be fitted with GPS system by the end of this financial year to know real time position of the trains.  It will operate on Real Time Information System (RTIS) with the help of ISRO satellite,” said Yadav.

He informed wifi will be provided in all the important stations by September this year.  CCTV will be installed all the important stations and Important Mail/Express Trains by the end of this financial year.  It will help to improve safety and security of the passengers.

Yadav said Bhubaneswar station main entrance will be redeveloped with the help of State Government along with the second entry from platform-six side. Fund has been provided to improve circulating area and road connectivity to the station, he added.

As the ECoR was primarily freight loading zone in Indian Railways, Yadav said this year the zone was targeted to cross 200 million ton.

This zone has some important ongoing projects. The important issue for slow progress of these projects is land acquisition problem, said Yadav.

“There is demand to run more trains from Bhubaneswar, so a survey has been sanctioned this year to run freight trains by-passing Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.  It will facilitate to run more trains from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack soon,” added Yadav.
