Flood-like situation in Malkangiri after heavy rainfall, schools shut

Malkangiri: Many parts of Malkangiri district witnessed flood-like situation after heavy rainfall in the district in last 24 hours.

According to Special Relief Commissioner, Kalimela received 145.00 mm rainfall in last 24 hours followed by K Gumma 120.00mm, Malkangiri, Mathili and Podia- 117.00 mm rainfall, Khairaput- 100.00 mm, and Korukonda-95.00 mm, respectively.

Taking precautionary measures, the Malkangiri district administration has declared holiday in all schools for two days – Friday and Saturday – in the district as a relief to children and also to reduce their vulnerability.

Heavy rainfall has triggered flood-like situation in Malkangiri district disrupting communication between Balimela and Malkangiri cut-off area with rainwater flowing over bridges in Korkunda and MV-37 areas.

The Special Relief Commissioner has asked the Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) General Manager to reduce power generation to base level so that water discharge in the Potteru river can be reduced.

Rainfall that continued since last night snapped the traffic on Malkangiri to Balimela, Malkangiri to Kalimela, Kalimela to Podia and Malkangiri to Sukuma roads due to overflow at Korukonda, MV37, Kangurukonda, Undrukonda (Kanyashram) and Challanguda.
