Bhubaneswar: The Samajwadi Party (SP), Odisha unit on Friday urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to extend the last date of submission of premium under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) till August 15.

In a letter to Patnaik, SP State unit president Rabi Behera said, “Delayed monsoon and scanty rainfall has created havoc among the farmers and they fear severe crop loss this Kharif season. Hence the non-loanee farmers are in anxiety and making queue before the co-operative society for insuring their crop under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) as they fear delayed transplantation and the seedling growing older.”

“Many farmers have failed to insure their crop by July 31 – the last date for crop insurance. There is every possibility of low pressure from August4 as predicted by IMD.  If it happens Odisha may receive a good rainfall which will be helpful for agricultural activities by the farming class,” said Behera.

Behera in his letter said, “Keeping in this view, as many of the farmers has failed to register themselves under PMFBY by the due date of July 31, we request you to extend the insurance date by another two weeks i.e. till August 15.”
