BK Sharma takes additional charge as DGP, says will focus on quality policing

Cuttack: Bijay Kumar Sharma took additional charge as Director General of Odisha Police on Thursday at the State police headquarters here. He took charge from outgoing DGP Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma, who was appointed as the Lokayukta Member.

The 1986-batch IPS officer will continue to discharge his responsibilities as DG (Fire Services), Commandant General (Home Guards) and Director (Civil Defence) while acting as the DGP, said a Government notification. He is allowed to remain in full additional charge of the post of DGP until further orders.

Talking to media persons Sharma said he will work to provide quality policing and better public service.

“I need blessings, support and cooperation of all to provide quality policing and better public service,” said Sharma.

Sharma has served as SP in Sundargarh, Phulbani, Sambalpur and Khurda. Between 1999 and 2006, he also served as SP in the CBI, New Delhi on Central deputation. He has also served as the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissioner of Police between 2008 and 2012.

Sources said the State Government has already sent names of some IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the post of DGP. As per the Supreme Court guidelines, the UPSC will shortlist three names and send them back to the State Government, which will select one.

Outgoing DGP Dr Sharma extended gratitude to all the officers for excellent support.

“I extend my sincere thanks & gratitude to all officers & men for their unequivocal and unstinted support & excellent teamwork. I deeply acknowledge the contributions made by each & every member of Odisha Police,” tweeted Dr Sharma.
