41 water projects dedicated to boost Western Odisha’s irrigation potential

Bhubaneswar, September 8, 2018: In the first phase, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday dedicated 41 projects built under the Parvati Giri Mega Lift Irrigation Project to people, a major fillip to irrigation in the State.

The 41 irrigation projects will provide water to 50,022 hectares in Kalahandi, Bargarh, Balangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, Subarnapur, Nabarangpur and Gajapati districts.

With activation of these projects, more than 7 lakh hectares of agricultural land in the State is now covered under irrigation. Irrigation on 3 lakh more hectares will be completed soon, said Patnaik.

Patnaik dedicated the projects through videoconferencing at the State Secretariat in the presence of Water Resources Minister Niranjan
Pujari, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Surya Narayan Patro, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Narasingha Mishra, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi and Development Commissioner R Balkrishanan.

The Mega Lift Irrigation Project will enable irrigation on 2.86 Lakh hectares under 199 programmes benefitting farmers in 23 districts. Through additional 80 projects, about 1 lakh hectare more will be covered under this mega project by March 2019.
