Bhubaneswar, Aug
1:  Experts on oncology have said that
advanced technology and improved treatment methods have opened the door to
effectively deal with the scourge of cancer and the condition does not mean
certain death anymore.
“Patients with lung cancer who lived barely
for a year after detection in the 1990s’ can now be provided effective
treatment and many have been leading normal lives. While such patients were
expected to live for barely a year earlier, today they live 5 to 6 years more
and live the normal life with effective treatment,” Dr. Ranjan Kumar Mohapatra,
Director, Medical Oncology at the SIMS Institute of Oncology, Chennai, said
while addressing a seminar at the SOA University on Sunday.
New technology has made
it possible to treat some of the cancers even in advanced stage, he said adding
there had been a paradigm shift in the treatment of breast cancer using
targeted drugs with less side effects.
Dr. Mohapatra was
addressing an orientation program —Primer in Oncology for Very Young Doctors
(PROVE 2016), organized by a team of oncologists to create awareness about the
field of oncology among final year medical students, interns and post-interns
from all over the state at the IMS and Sum Hospital.
Prof. Surendranath
Senapati, Head of department at the Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre,
Cuttack, who spoke as the chief guest, said cancer did not spell certain death
anymore.
Praising the Oncology
department at Sum Hospital as one of the best, he urged upon MBBS students and
interns to choose oncology as a career as it could provide them a lot of
satisfaction.
“Bright students these
days are opting to go for a career in radiology while surgical and medical
oncology have great prospect. It will give you a lot of satisfaction,” Dr
Senapati said.
“There would be a huge
requirement of oncologists in the country in the next few years as the number
of cancer patients was growing, he said adding the number of patients visiting
the Acharya Harihar cancer centre annually had doubled to 40,000 within the
last four years while the paucity of oncologists was distressing. More medical
students should opt for oncology as modern technology and treatment methods had
made it a satisfactory profession, Dr Senapati added.
Prof. Gangadhar Sahu,
Dean of IMS and Sum Hospital and Chairman of the organizing committee, said
medical professionals had the responsibility to spread the message that cancer
could be fought back successfully while referring to the example of cricketer
Yuvraj Singh.

their knowledge and medical skills and honing their approach towards cancer
care at the day-long program.
