Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced an annual award in the name of ‘Suraj’ of Ganjam district whose parents donated six vital organs of their brain-dead son to save lives of others.
The award will motivate organ donors from the State and institutions that facilitate organ donations.
Earlier in the day the Chief Minister met Suraj’s parents – Babuli Sethi and Gitanjanli Sethi – at Lok Seva Bhavan here and highly appreciated their noble act saying that it will be an exemplary inspiration to society. The Chief Minister announced an award of Rs 5 lakh from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) in recognition for the inspiring act.
Suraj, was a resident of Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district and was working in Surat. He lost his life after facing an road accident on October 29. After struggling for about five-six days in hospital, he was declared brain dead on November 2. His parents contacted by a local NGO. They decided to donate his organs to save lives of others. Accordingly, his heart, liver, two kidneys and both the eyes were transplanted to save lives of six persons.
His heart was carried by plane to Fortis Hospital in Mumbai and was transplanted in the body of a woman. Both his kidneys and liver were transplanted into three persons in Ahmadabad and two eyes went to two persons in Surat.
