Mega mock tsunami drill on September 5 in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, August 30, 2018: A multi-state mega mock exercise on tsunami would be held in Odisha on September 5.

The Odisha government on Wednesday organized a State-level orientation programme of block level facilitator for Tsunami Mock Exercise (IOwave-18). The exercise for Indian Ocean rim countries (IOWave 18) is scheduled to be conducted on September 4 and 5.

This is an international event coordinated by IOC/UNESCO.

In India, the exercise is coordinated by Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).

In order to check the preparedness against Tsunami, it has been decided to participate in the Tsunami Mock exercises and conduct the drill in six costal districts of Odisha on Sept 5.

As a part of different activities of the exercise, The State level Orientation Programme of Block level facilitators was organized by Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) on Wednesday (Aug 29) at Rajiv Bhawan, Bhubaneswar.

Participants from Odisha Fire Services, Civil Defence Organization and Community Mobilizers of OSDMA attended the programme.

The facilitators will be mobilized to 22 tsunami prone blocks in six coastal districts for sensitizing block level officials, community volunteers, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) members and local government officials for conducting the exercise.

The block level orientation programme will be organized on August 31 at the respective block headquarters.
