Cuttack: The 59th State level Police Commemoration Day – 2018 was observed at Cuttack in a befitting manner at the State police headquarters, remembering the sacrifice of 10 policemen who lost their lives at the hands of Chinese troops in 1959.

Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma attended the programme as chief guest and paid floral tribute to the martyred police personnel who laid down their lives while fighting in the line of duty.

Addressing the police personnel, DGP Sharma said this year as many as 414 police personnel in the country including one from Odisha laid down their lives for the cause of our nation while fighting in the line of duty.

“As we observe the Police Commemoration Day today, we always remember all the martyrs who laid down their lives at the altar of duty are brave hearts. We must stand with the families of these brave hearts and rededicate ourselves to the service of our motherland,” said Sharma.

He appealed to all the police personnel to work wholeheartedly for the country in a true spirit.

The DGP also honoured family members of eight slain security personnel to mark the event.

Director Intelligence Sunil Roy, IG (Central Range) Soumendra Priyadarshi and Asit Panigarhi among many senior officers of State police attended the programme and paid homage to the martyred souls.

The 1959 incident killed 10 policemen and left seven with serious injuries. They were later taken as prisoners. Weeks later China returned the bodies of the 10 personnel who were later cremated with full police honour at Hot Springs in North Eastern Ladakh. And since then the day is being celebrated as the Police Commemoration Day across the country.
