Tigress Priyanka’s death brings number of big cat to 26 at Nandankanan Zoo

Nandankanan: Tigress ‘Priyanka’ died at Nandankanan Zoological Park on Monday. She was unwell for the past two years due to old age-related ailments

Aged about 19 years 5 months Priyanka was born on March 25, 2000 from Ashok and Tanuja. She died today at 10.30 am, sources in the zoo said.

The death was due to old age complicacies and she was under old age care and treatment since two years. The death of Priyanka has brought down the total number of tigers in the zoo to 26, including five male, eight female and four white tigers.

The average lifespan of a tiger is between 16 years and 18 years in captivity.

The animal was being treated by veterinary doctors as it was suffering from old age ailments. As per procedure, post mortem was performed on her before the final rites were conducted.

Nandankanan is the first zoo in the World to breed White tiger and Melanistic tiger.
