Bhubaneswar: The Nikhila Utkal Sankirtan Mahasangha, which
represents over 1 lakh Sankirtan artists throughout the State as its members,
threatened to hold a mass protest rally here in front of State Assembly on
February 12 to press their longstanding demands. More than 5,000 members will participate in
the rally.

Coming down heavily on the Government for its continuous
indifference towards their issues and demands, Mahasangha deputy chairman Dr
Rangadhar Nayak said here at a Press conference that though Sankirtan artists
have been registered under State Government to disseminate and mobilize the
message of the various schemes of government in every block, but unfortunately
the artists performing the traditional art have been leading very miserable
life and struggling to earn their livelihood.

He further alleged that the government has turned a deaf ear
to their problems and left them in lurch only after registering them. The
Mahasangha has been demanding to connect the Sankirtan Mandali with the
Bhagabat Tungi of the concerned village, to rovide an annual Government aid of
Rs 10,000 to each Mandali for upkeep and other logistics facilities including
promotion of the art, to provide land at Bhubaneswar for the office of the
Mahasangha, provision of proportionate higher pension for the senior artists,
besides executing all sorts of activities and programmes related to Sankirtan
culture through the Mahasangha.
