103 crorepatis in fray for first phase Assembly polls in Odisha

As many as 103 out of the 673 candidates in the fray for the 70 Assembly seats,
going to polls in the first phase in state on April 10, are crorepatis. They
account for about 15 per cent of the contestants, according to a joint analysis
by Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Odisha Election Watch (OEW). OEW
has analysed the affidavits of all 673candidates contesting the first phase of
polls in 70 Assembly constituencies in the state.
The
report which was released by OEW coordinator Ranjan Kumar Mohantyand former
bureaucrat Sahadev Sahoo here on Sunday stated that Dilip Ray, the BJP nominee
from the Rourkela Assembly segment is the richest in the term of annual income
of Rs 1.58 crore as per the Income Tax Returns (ITR) filed for 2012-13.
Ray
is followed by Rs 1.11 crore of Chakradhar Paika, an Independent candidate from
Mohana and Rs 50.50 lakh of AU Singh Deo, the BJD candidate from Balangir.
In
terms of high asset category too, Dilip Ray tops the list. His total assets are
worth Rs 106.82 crore, followed by Rs 17.65 crore of Nitesh Gangadeb of the BJP
from Deogarh and Rs 13.82 crore of Sugnana Kumari Deo of the BJD from
Kabisuryanagar.
As per
the report as many as 217 candidates have not declared their PAN details.
Only
52 women candidates are in the fray for this phase of elections.
The
report stated that 389 candidates have educational qualification of Plus II and
below while 265 are graduates. The age of 455 (68 per cent) candidates are
between 25 and 50 years while 214 (32 per cent) are between 51 and 80 years.
