Bhubaneswar, April 28:
The Odisha Disabled Peoples’ Network, a forum fighting for the cause of
physically-challenged people, on Tuesday opposed the State Government’s
decision to bring transgender and widow under the newly constituted Department
of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disability.
“It is a welcome step
that the Government has considered our demand and constituted an exclusive department.
But how can transgender and widow people be part of the department? On what
logic the Government equalled them with disabled people?” questioned Sanayas
Behera of the Odisha Disabled Peoples’ Network.
Behera said more than
13 lakh population of the State are disabled.
The State Cabinet on
Tuesday approved a proposal for creation of a new department known as
Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disability.
This department, which
was earlier with the Women and Child Development Department, would now function
independently.
