CM’s 1,250-cr sops for Bijepur ahead of by-poll

Bhubaneswar, October 16, 2017: With a by-election to the Bijepur
Assembly seat fast approaching, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday
announced Rs 1,250 crore worth underground pipeline-based irrigation system namely
Bijepur Lift canal System.
The by-poll is necessitated after three-time Congress MLA
from the constituency Subal Sahu died of cancer on August 22.
This project will irrigate a gross command area of about
32,000 hectares, including 25,600 hectares in Kharif and 7,000 hectares in Rabi
season, said the Chief Minister.
Patnaik’s announcement coincides with his birth anniversary.
“We are on course to create additional irrigation potential
of 10 lakh hectares in the State during the five years by 2019. Augmentation of
irrigation potential has been a longstanding demand of the people of Bargarh
district, especially the drought prone areas of the district. In this regard we
have decided to implement Bijepur Lift Canal System, which would be the first
of its kind with underground pipeline based irrigation system,” said Patnaik.
Maintaining that the proposed project will cost about Rs 1,250
crore, Patnaik said once complete it will pump water from Bargarh Main canal
through an 18 km long underground rising main pipeline, where from irrigation
will be provided through underground pipelines based distribution system with
outlets for every four hectares of land.
The project will be named as Gangadhar Meher Lift Canal
System, added the CM.
