Bhubaneswar: Patrolling at Bhubaneswar railway station gathered speed with East Coast Railway (ECoR) introducing Segway patrolling system (self-balancing two-wheeled hoverboard scooters) for Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel.
The new system will improve mobility and reduce response time to emergency calls.
ECoR General Manager Vidya Bhushan inaugurated the facility at Bhubaneswar Railway Station in the presence of RPF Principal Chief Security Commissioner Raja Ram and Khurda Road Divisional Railway Manager Sashikant Singh.
“The battery operated and eco-friendly Segway System will help RPF personnel to move from one place to another during their patrolling duty at Stations in less time and also help in crowd control. This can also help RPF personnel for safety of passengers and protection of Railway properties. This hi-tech patrolling system will also increase the mobility and response time of RPF personnel and will be helpful in more visible policing,” said ECoR GM Vidya Bhusan.
RPF personnel have been trained and more Segway will be introduced as per the feasibility, asserted Bhusan.
The Segway System has been introduced in many important stations of the country. In ECoR jurisdiction, Bhubaneswar is the second station and first in Odisha to have the facility after Visakhapatnam.
“RPF receives reports of theft cases or snatching cases including cases of abusing, nuisance by passengers through twitter or through Security Helpline Number 182. These kinds of problems will be solved faster with the introduction of Segway,” said RPF Principal Chief Security Commissioner Raja Ram.
A total of six Segways have been placed into service. Each Segway costs Rs 81,900. Apart from Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri stations have been covered under the integrated security system. Twelve staff have been trained to run the vehicle.
The segway can move 18 Kmph. It is eco-friendly, battery operated, pollution free, having horn and light facility. Six-seven hours are needed to charge the segway. It will run 30 kms in single charge. It can turn 360 degrees.
As it is a remote controlled, the possibility of theft is very low.
