Bhubaneswar, April 22: The daily COVID-19 cases breached 6,000-mark in Odisha on Thursday as the State reported 6,164 new infections recording a steep rise of 27 per cent in the last 24 hours, as per the Health Department.
The state’s infection in past 24 hours is the highest ever in a day.
A total of 42,983 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.
Khurda reported highest 1,132 cases, becoming the first district to post 4-digit cases on a single day.
Of the total cases, 3,575 were detected from among the quarantined people while 2,589 were local contacts.
The State also recorded seven more casualties due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the virus toll to 1,965. Of the seven fatalities, Ganjam and Rayagada reported two deaths each while Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Khurda reported one death each.
These new cases have been detected in all the 30 districts of the State. This apart, 241 cases were reported from the State Pool.
Khurda continues to be the worst hit district with 1,132 cases followed by Nuapada (459) and Kalahandi (452).
With this, the total virus cases mounted to 3,88,479 with 35,075 active cases.
Of it, one each reported from Cuttack, Mayurbhanj and Sundergarh districts and two in Nuapada. With this, the virus death toll mounted to 1,965.
