Bhubaneswar, April 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep grief over the demise of eminent Odia musician and singer Prafulla Kar.
Modi said that Kar will be remembered for his pioneering contribution to Odia culture and music.
The Prime Minister tweeted, “Anguished by the passing away of Shri Prafulla Kar Ji. He will be remembered for his pioneering contribution to Odia culture and music. He was blessed with a multifaceted personality and his creativity was reflected in his works. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
The eminent musician passed away on Sunday night at his residence in Satyanagar in Bhubaneswar. He was 83. The veteran singer was suffering from age-related ailments.
His last rites will be performed at Swarga Dwara in Puri today. He is survived by his wife Manorama Kar and two sons Mahaprasad Kar and Mahadeep Kar.
Born on 16 February 1939 in Puri, Kar was an eminent musician, singer, lyricist, writer and columnist. He had become a household name in the State with his song ‘Kamala Desha Rajakumara’.
He had received the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2015 and Jayadeva Award in the year 2004.
People from different walks of life, including Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan condoled the death of the veteran singer.
“Odisha’s music circle has suffered an irreparable loss with the passing away of the veteran singer,” said Pradhan.
