Odisha Health Minister Naba Das shot at by cop, succumbs to bullet injury

Bhubaneawar, January 29: Naba Kisore Das, senior BJD leader and Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister, succumbed to a bullet injury to his chest after being shot at by a police officer at Brajrajnagar in Jharsuguda district on Sunday.

“Health Minister was admitted to Apollo with gunshot wounds to the left chest. A team of doctors led by Dr Debashish Nayak immediately attended to and operated on him. On operating was found that a single bullet had entered and exited the body, injuring the heart and left lung and causing massive internal bleeding and injury,” said a Apollo Hospital bulletin.

“The injuries were repaired, and steps were taken to improve the pumping of the heart. He was given urgent ICU care. But despite best of efforts, he could not be revived and succumbed to his injuries,” it added.

Das, who represents the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency since 2009, was first rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Jharsuguda where a special team of doctors treated him. Later, he was airlifted to Bhubaneswar for better treatment.

The Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Gopal Das, who opened fire has been detained.
