BMC geared up to meet any exigency in case of cyclone: Mayor

Bhubaneswar, May 4: Bhubaneawar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Sulochana Das on Thursday chaired a meeting to review civic body’s preparedness to deal with a cyclone and asked officials to be prepared for any eventuality.

The meeting comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its forecast that a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6, and under its influence, a low-pressure area may form over the same region during the subsequent 48 hours.

BMC Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange and officials of the Fire, Forest, and Electricity departments and the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) attended the meeting.

The Mayor directed the officials to ensure that ward level assessment being done involving WCC.

The meeting focused on proactive measures like desilting of drains, strengthening of control room 1929 (24×7), setting up of control centre at zonal level, readiness of pumpsets, drinking water facilities, tree cutters will be initiated to deal with any eventuality.

“A preparatory meeting was held today. All aspects, including setting up a control room and shifting people to safe shelters, were discussed in the meeting. Though there is no cyclone warning, the officials were asked to remain prepared,” said Mayor Das.
