Bhubaneswar, June 7: Six people died after rakes of an engine-less stationary goods train ran over a group of labourers near at Jajpur Road station on Wednesday evening. Two others sustained serious injuries in the incident.
The incident occurred involving a group of labourers who sought shelter beneath the rakes during a sudden rain and thunderstorm. They were unaware of its unexpected movement and got crushed under it.
An official from the East Coast Railway said that for the past few months, a set of rakes without an engine had been stationed on that line.
“Some contractual labourers engaged by a contractor for Railway Work took shelter under the stabled rake to get protection from the wind and rain of Norwester near Jajpur Keonjar Road,” it said.
“A monsoon Reserve Rake without Engine reserved at the sick line near Jajpur Keonjhar Road rolled on due to heavy thunderstorms, today,” it stated.
“As a result, six persons were run over and two are injured. The injured persons were taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital by Railways for their treatment,” it added.
Meanwhile, Divisional Railway Official lead by DRM Khurda Road rushed to the spot.
The injured persons were sent to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
