Odisha: CM orders judicial probe into ‘assault’ of Army officer, fiancée

Bhubaneswar, September 22: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi late on Sunday night ordered a judicial probe into the alleged custody violence against an Army Captain and his fiancée at Bharatpur Police Station amid nation-wide outrage.

Justice Chitaranjan Dash has been appointed as the Commission of Inquiry. The Commission will submit report within six months. The State Government will request the Orissa High Court to monitor the probe, said a CMO communique.

The Army officer and his fiancée were allegedly assaulted when they went to the Bharatpur Police Station to lodge a complaint after they were harassed in an incident of road rage near Pathargadia on Chandaka road.

The fiancée claimed she was sexually abused after being arrested by the police who alleged she misbehaved with on-duty officers, including the former IIC of Bharatpur Police Station Dinakrushna Mishra. She also alleged that the Army officer was illegally detained and tortured.

With the alleged assault and sexual abuse of the fiancée of an Army officer inside a police station in Bhubaneswar causing nation-wide outrage and a political storm, the State Government was forced to order a judicial probe.

Recntly, Chief Minister Majhi gave assured that the culprits would be given “exemplary punishment.”
