Bhubaneawar, May 20: The Odisha Government on Thursday decided to include Mucormycosis aka Black Fungus as notifiable disease under Epidemic Diseases Act-1897 in view of reported rise in the incidence of Black Fungus amongst COVID-19 patients.
The State Government has already formed a Task Force to monitor the incidents of such patients.
Recently, the Task Force has suggested a protocol for identification, treatment and follow up action in addition to public awareness. Further, the Committee recommends to declare Mucormycosis (Black Fungus) as notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act-1987 so that report on all such suspected and confirmed cases will be shared by all district health facilities to the Health and Family Welfare Department and subsequently to IDSP Surveillance System for monitoring.
On Wednesday, the Centre has asked States to notify mucormycosis, a deadly fungal disease being reported in many COVID-19 patients during or after the infection, under the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897, making it mandatory for hospitals to report its every single case.
