Bhubaneswar, November 12: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will add 14 more Material Recovery Facility (MRF) Centers. The BMC’s initiative for segregated waste management in a scientific manner is supported by Micro Composting Centers (MCC) and MRFs.
Initially 41 MCCs and 10 MRFs were planned. Now, the capital city has 41 MCCs and 24 MRFs.
“Based on the load of dry waste in the city on daily basis BMC Commissioner Sanjya Kumar Singh has instructed to construct more numbers of MRFs. Construction activities are going on to achieve the target. As on date four numbers of MRFs are completely functional, civil construction of eight are over and rest are in process,” said a BMC release.
In MRF, recyclable materials like card board, glass, plastic materials, clothes, leather, shoes and other materials are segregated for its processing. The materials are pressed in the belling machine to be handed over to certified recyclers of State Pollution Control Board. Besides, there are weighing machine and napkin incinerators in each unit.
Five Swachha Karmis from rag pickers’ group are engaged in each MRF. They support in the segregation of recyclable materials and get monthly incentive of Rs 7, 000.
Total 24 MRFs will fulfill the need of 67 wards in the city. Of it, 10 will be set up in North Zone and seven each will function in South East and South West Zone respectively. The capacity of each is 10 ton per day.
Worth mentioning that awareness drive is continuing for door-to-door segregated waste collection. Swachha Sathis, Sanitary Inspectors, sanitation Experts and Swachha Bhubaneswar Abhiyan Cell Experts are facilitating the drive to promote circular economy.
