Koraput, December 25: The Department of Sociology, Central University of Odisha (CUO), Koraput has recently organised a special lecture on ‘Implications of Social Science on Health Determinants’.
The special lecture has been delivered by Dr. Kalyan Brata Saha, a noted scientist from NIRTH-ICMR, Jabalpur. Prof. Sharat Kumar Palita, Vice-Chancellor in charge of the University also spoke.
Dr. Saha highlighted the role of social sciences in understanding the social determinants of health.
He has also emphasised information, education and communication for ensuring health-seeking behaviour among individuals in tribal areas.
He extensively spoke on social research techniques and shared the successful story of eradicating Malaria in Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh by using IEC (Information, Education, Communication), BCC (Behaviour Change Communication), ACSM (Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization) methods. He discussed about the social determinants of health, he also guided the students for their future endeavours in research field by advising them to be thorough in data estimation techniques and building good rapport with masses in the field. Dr. Saha has mentioned several instruments for conducting field study in tribal areas in terms of case study, observation, interview, FGD, PRA, etc.
Dr. Kapila Khemundu, Head I/c, Department of Sociology delivered the welcome address. Dr. Nupur Pattnaik, Faculty, Sociology introduced the speaker. Dr. Bijay Maharana, Faculty, Sociology offered vote thanks at the end of the lecture. The special lecture has been attended by all the students as well as faculty members of the Department of Sociology. The especial lecture was moderated by Dr. Aditya Keshari Mishra, Faculty, Sociology.
