In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has launched a nationwide mass mobilisation campaign titled ‘One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution’ ahead of World Environment Day 2025 celebrations.

This campaign reinforces India’s commitment to combating plastic pollution and promoting eco-friendly alternatives, closely aligned with the government’s flagship initiative, Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav Urges Collective Action

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, officially launched the campaign by sharing a pre-campaign video on his social media platforms. He urged citizens across the country to move beyond awareness and take collective action by adopting sustainable lifestyles to eliminate plastic pollution.

World Environment Day 2025: Theme and Significance

Observed annually on June 5th, World Environment Day is the United Nations’ principal platform to promote worldwide environmental awareness and action. This year’s theme under Mission LiFE is ‘Say No to Single Use Plastic’, emphasizing the urgent need to reduce single-use plastics that contribute heavily to pollution.

Key Objectives of the Campaign

The campaign focuses on three main pillars:

  • Awareness and Advocacy about the harmful impacts of plastic pollution

  • Reduction in Use and Generation of plastic waste, especially single-use plastic

  • Effective Management of plastic waste through segregation, collection, disposal, and recycling

  • Promotion of Sustainable Alternatives to replace single-use plastics

Nationwide Activities to Promote Eco-Friendly Alternatives

Leading up to World Environment Day 2025, the campaign will engage multiple stakeholders—including Central Ministries, State and UT Governments, local bodies, educational institutions, industries, and civil society—in a wide array of activities:

  • Awareness Drives: Social media campaigns, street plays (nukkad nataks), public pledges, poster and essay competitions, and marathons

  • Clean-Up Drives: At beaches, parks, riversides, campuses, tourist spots, railway stations, and rural areas

  • Workshops & Webinars: Focused on sustainable practices and alternatives to single-use plastics

  • Educational Initiatives: School exhibitions, art and craft using recycled plastic, quizzes, hackathons, and interactive games

  • Community Involvement: Localized waste segregation and recycling by RWAs, municipal bodies, Anganwadi workers, and cooperatives

Call to Action: Join the Movement on the ‘Meri LiFE’ Portal

All stakeholders are encouraged to align their activities with the campaign’s goals and upload their event details on the ‘Meri LiFE’ portal. This platform will serve as a hub for coordinating efforts and building a nationwide movement towards sustainable living.

The Ministry calls upon every citizen to participate actively in this campaign and contribute meaningfully towards ending plastic pollution in India.
