Koraput Collector withdraws order banning sale of non-veg items on Republic Day after criticism

Koraput, January 25: A controversial order imposing a ban on sale of meat, chicken, fish, eggs and other non-vegetarian items on Republic Day on Monday in Koraput district was on Sunday recalled by the Koraput Collector after it drew flak from people from different walks of life.

The official revocation order was recalled with immediate effect after due consideration, said an official release.

“In continuation of this Collectorate Letter No. 93, dated-23.01.2026 regarding prohibition on sale of meat, chicken, fish, egg and order non-vegetarian food items on the occasion of 77th Republic Day Celebration, 2026 in Korpaut district, and whereas the said instruction was issued purely on the suggestion of the District Level Republic Day Preparatory Committee. Now, after due consideration, the aforesaid Letter No. 93, dated-23.01.2026 is hereby revoked with immediate effect,” said an official letter issued by the Koraput Collector and District Magistrate.

Notably, in an official letter issued on Friday, Korpaut Collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan directed all tehsildars, block development officers (BDOs) and executive officers to enforce the prohibition in their respective jurisdictions drawing flak from different quarters.

The letter had stated that, “You are hereby requested to issue an official notification in your jurisdiction prohibiting the sale of meat, chicken, fish, eggs and other non-vegetarian items on Jan 26, 2026, for the occasion of the 77th Republic Day celebrations in Koraput district.” The Collector had also urged officials to ensure strict compliance

However, people from different walks of life took to social media to question the rationale behind the ban.
