Man who climbs Utkal University library building rescued after 5-hour drama

Bhubaneswar: A middle-aged man who climbed atop a multi-storied library building inside the Utkal University campus here on Friday to commit suicide, was finally brought down safely after five hours of high voltage drama.

Police and fire brigade staff had to struggle for nearly four hours to persuade him to relent.

The man is identified as Subodh Barik alias Tapan, a resident of Praharajpur in Pattamundai area in Kendrapara district. He was rushed to Capital Hospital for health check up.

According to sources, he was working in India Post. He was suspended from services due to his mental illness in 2018. He had come to Bhubaneswar to consult a lawyer in October and did not return home. A missing report was also lodged at the Nayapalli police station last month.

As per reports, Subodh managed to climb atop the multi-storied Parija Library at around 9 am with help of a temporary ladder being used by painters. This was first spotted by some painters who were engaged to paint the building as the university is all sent to celebrate platinum jubilee from Saturday.

They informed the university authorities who later informed Saheed Nagar police and fire brigade. Hundreds of people had also gathered around the library to check on what was happening, which led to a chaos-like situation in the campus for hours.

The fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot in a bid to rescue the man with a Bronto Skylift. However, the man threatened to jump off from the 100 ft terrace when the rescue team tried to reach near him giving a tough challenge to the rescue team.

Later, another Bronto Skylift was pressed into service and he was finally rescued.
