Budget: Rs 1 crore to Rs 1 lakh crore – Odisha’s phenomenal journey of 80 years

Bhubaneswar, June 11, 2018: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on
Monday launched the book ‘80 Years of Odisha Budget’, a compilation of all State
budgets since the first in 1936.
The first budget in 1936-37 focused on transforming the
socio-economic condition of the newly formed province, summed up to Rs 1.77 crore. Since then, it has grown at compound annual growth rate of
15 per cent to Rs 1,06,910 crore in 2017-18 and grew further to Rs 1,20,028 crore in 2018-19.
In 2013-14, the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD Government adopted a
separate Agriculture Budget and a separate Agriculture Cabinet in 2015 to
emphasize on agriculture and farmers’ empowerment through improved agricultural
practices.
Odisha is the first State in country to bring out such a
compilation like this that records its changing socio-economic, political and
cultural landscapes through lens of Budget.
It will be a valuable document for scholars, researchers and
policy makers, said the Chief Minister.
Over these years, the State has made significant strides in
development and successive Governments have shown their commitment to the
progress of the state and people.
“We have achieved many milestones but there has to be a
constant endeavor to work together to fulfil the aspirations of people and
carve a better future for Odisha. Many milestones have been achieved in the
last eighty years and called for constant efforts from all stakeholders to keep
up with the growing aspirations of people and build a better future,” said
Patnaik.
Assembly Speaker Pradeep Kumar Amat, Finance Minister
Sashibhusan Behera, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Narasingha Mishra,
Finance Secretary TK Pandey was present.
