Phulbani: The Kui Samaj Seva Samiti, an organisation fighting for the interests of the tribals in Kandhamal district, held its annual convention here for two days on Sunday and Monday under the chairmanship of its president Covind Chandra Ghatal.
Former Additional Relief Commissioner Mihir Chand Mallick and Dr Nirad Chandra Kanhar, who attended as guests, said people should be educated and sensitised to remove blind beliefs from the society. They also urged people to form a healthy society by boycotting use of tobacco.
The guests and Samiti members demanded steps to protect and promote the Kui language and literature.
Samiti secretary Srinivas Mallick read out the annual report. Among others, Nikhil Utkal Kui Samaj president Bhimsen Pradhan, Abani Kumar Kanhar, Birendra Kanhar, Manjudei Kanhar, Lalnand Prahdan, Akankhaya Pradhan, Rodhan Mallick and Dinabandhu Kanhar were present.
Newly-elected MLA Adang Kanhar was felicitated. Samiti vice-president Sudarshan Kanhar delivered a vote of thanks.
