Angul: A Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court on Friday awarded death sentence to a man after convicting him for rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Angul on January 20.
Srinibas Dehruy alias Anam raped the Class-VII girl and stoned her to death after kidnapping her near Lingarajodi nullah of Kangula village around one km away from her house while she was on her way to her father on the fateful day.
The court held the accused guilty on all the three counts and sentenced the accused punishment of death for murder, rigorous life imprisonment for life till the end of natural life for rape and rigorous imprisonment for seven years for the offence of destruction of evidence.
The accused was caught within 48 hours of the crime from a dingy hideout in Kolkata. Investigating Officer Ramesh Chandra Bisoi used his domain expertise to collect evidence using state-of-the-art investigating technology like technical surveillance, advance forensic examination methodology including DNA profiling and submitted chargesheet within 30 days of registration of the case.
The case was promptly treated as Red Flag and monitored closely Angul SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra.
After the submission of chargesheet, the trial was conducted on day-to-day basis and judgement was pronounced within six months.
The victim’s case has been recommended to the District Legal Service Authority for compensation under Victim Compensation Scheme.
