Bhubaneswar: BJP Legislature Party Deputy Leader Bishnu Charan Sethi’s remarks in the Assembly against Muslim women created noisy scenes in the House on Thursday.

The Assembly witnessed noisy scenes as opposition Congress and ruling BJD members protested against a statement made by Sethi on Muslim women vis-a-vis Triple Talaq Bill passed in the Parliament recently.

During Zero Hour, Sethi, reacting to Congress members’ contention that BJD members primarily opposed Triple Talaq Bill during discussion but supported during voting, wanted to know why Congress members were opposing the Bill when Muslim women are in distress. Even Muslim women have taken to prostitution in cities like Mumbai and Kolkata. While 38 countries do not have Triple Talaq system, the Koran also doesn’t mention about utterances of Triple Talaq to give divorce to wives.

Congress members soon stood at their chairs and demanded that the deragatory statement be expunged from recordings of the House.

As Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro said that he would examine the matter, Congress members rushed into the Well of the House and shouted slogans demanding immediate expunge of the word.

Unable to run proceedings, the Speaker adjourned the House at 12.08 pm till 3 pm.

As Congress members continued to protest, the Speaker called an all-party meeting and adjourned the House thrice at 3.09 pm till 4.24 pm.
