Bhubaneawar, May 24: The deep depression over eastcentral Bay of Bengal intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’ (pronounced as ‘Yass’), said a statement of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Accordingly, cyclone alert was issued for Odisha while yellow message was issued for West Bengal coasts.
The deep depression now lay centred about 600 km north-northwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 540 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 650 km south-southeast of Balasore (Odisha) and 630 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal).
It is very likely to cross north Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar islands around noon of May 26 as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS).
“The Deep Depression over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary during past 6 hours, intensified into Cyclonic Storm ‘Yaas’ (pronounced as ‘Yass’) and lay centred at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 24th May, 2021 over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal near latitude 16.3°N and longitude 89.7°E, about 600 km north-northwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 540 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 650 km south-southeast of Balasore (Odisha) and 630 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal),” said IMD.
It is very likely to move slowly north northwestwards, intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 24 hours and into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 24 hours, it added.
It would continue to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach Northwest Bay of Bengal near north Odisha and West Bengal coasts by 26th May early morning. It is very likely to cross north Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar islands around noon of 26th May as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, it predicted.
