Bhubaneawar, May 16: Ronali Behera, the daughter-in-law of former Odisha Finance Minister and senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA Shashi Bhusan Behera, on Tuesday brought allegations of physical and mental torture against her in-laws.

In a complaint registered at the Banki police station in Cuttack district, Ronali said her husband Satyaprakash Behera and parent-in-law tortured her for dowry and as she opposed her spouse’s extra-marital affairs.

Ronali had married Behera’s son Satyaprakash on March 3, 2021. She has accused her husband of having an extra-marital affair with another married woman.

“Everybody at my in-laws’ place used to torture me in the presence of my father-in-law. The torture started barely 10 days after my marriage. My in-laws had asked me to bring my old gold ornaments which had already been exchanged at a jewellery outlet to buy new ornaments during my marriage. However, they continued to torture me,” alleged Ronali.

She alleged that her husband used to talk with someone till late at night. “Later, I came to know that he was talking with a married woman with whom she has extra-marital affairs,” she alleged.

Ronali further alleged that her in-laws used to torture her for dowry and would force her to bring Rs 40 lakh from her parents.

The Kendrapara MLA refuted the allegations levelled by his daughter-in-law.

“There could be some differences between my son and daughter-in-law. She went to her paternal home with her father after staying in our home for one month and 11 days. The allegations of dowry demand are baseless,” Behera said.
