Bhubaneswar, October 30: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday announced a compensation of Rs 6 lakh each for the families of two Odia workers who lost their lives in a recent construction accident on the Patna Metro project in Bihar.
Expressing profound sorrow, the Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the victims have been identified as Manoj Behera from Gochhabari village in Gania block and Bijay Behera from Kadua village in Nayagarh district.
The tragic incident occurred late Monday night near the National Institute of Technology (NIT) on Ashok Rajpath in Patna. During the construction of an underground metro tunnel, a loco machine experienced a sudden brake failure, leading it to strike several workers along its path. Three workers lost their lives, and four others sustained serious injuries.
The accident left one worker dead on the spot, while six others were transported to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for emergency care. Unfortunately, two additional workers succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), overseeing the project, has launched an investigation into the brake failure to prevent future incidents.
Odisha Labour Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia confirmed on Tuesday that out of the seven workers impacted, three hailed from Odisha. He added that one of the injured Odia workers is currently undergoing treatment at PMCH.
This devastating incident underscores the critical importance of safety protocols and precautions in large-scale construction projects to safeguard workers’ lives.
