Patna, January 28: Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) national president Nitish Kumar handed over his resignation to Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Sunday.
“I have submitted my resignation as Bihar CM today. I have also asked the Governor to dissolve the government. Things were not working out well,” said Kumar after resigning as Bihar CM.
Kumar would rejoin the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), bringing an end to the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ rule in the State.
It would mark the fourth time that Nitish would be switching sides.
In the Bihar Assembly of 243, the RJD has 79 MLAs followed by the BJP at 78, JD(U) 45, Congress 19, the CPI (M-L) 12, CPI (M) and CPI at 2 each, and the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular)’s four.
Another two seats are with the AIMIM and an Independent.
The Governor accepted Kumar’s resignation, and asked him to continue as caretaker CM till a new Government is formed.
Kumar submitted his resignation after chairing a meeting with party MLAs at his official residence.
A new Government with the support of the BJP is likely to be in place by the evening, according to sources.
