Bhawanipatna: In a landmark initiative aimed at advancing gender equality and empowering women, Maa Manikeshwari University (MMU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Alliance of Women (NAWO). The agreement was formally signed by Dr. Nibedita Nath, Acting Vice-Chancellor of MMU, and renowned social activist Pramila Swain, who serves as the Secretary of NAWO and Convenor of its Odisha Chapter.
This strategic partnership will facilitate joint initiatives centered on women’s empowerment, gender sensitization, prevention of sexual harassment, and the promotion of legal and financial literacy among female students. NAWO, a leading national organization was established following the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing (1995) and formally launched in New Delhi to drive forward the commitments made at Beijing. It operates through state chapters, most notably in Odisha, where it maintains a strong grassroots presence across the state, advocating for women’s rights, education, and autonomy.
Under the MoU, NAWO will conduct a series of awareness campaigns, workshops, and training programs across MMU and its affiliated colleges. These sessions will address critical issues such as gender-based discrimination, sexual violence, and the development of leadership and economic skills among women students. Additionally, the partnership will offer students internship opportunities with NAWO, providing them with hands-on experience in the field of gender advocacy and social justice.
Pramila Swain, who has long been associated with legendary freedom fighter and social reformer Ramadevi, has dedicated her life to women’s causes in Odisha. Her involvement in cementing this collaboration adds immense value and vision to the initiative.
The academic community and intellectual circles have welcomed the MoU as a timely and meaningful step, particularly in the face of contemporary social challenges. Experts believe the collaboration will cultivate a more inclusive, equitable, and aware academic environment, benefitting not only students but society at large.
