1.07 lakh cognizable offences recorded in 2018 in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: According to a White Paper presented by the Home Department in the State Assembly on Saturday, as many as 1,07,408 cognizable offences were registered in 2018 and charge-sheets were filed in 69,341 cases. In 2017, the figure of registered cognizable offences was 1, 03, 866. Thus, 3,542 more offences were registered in 2018 compared to 2017.

Even as the number of cognizable offences increased in 2018 compared to the preceding year, the State Government has claimed that the law and order situation in the State was by and large peaceful.

As many as 2,502 rape cases were registered in 2018 against 2,221 in 2017. Charge-sheets were filed in 1,526 rape cases against 1,401 in 2017. Thus, nearly seven rape cases were reported in 2018.

A total of 1,378 murder cases were filed in 2018 against 1,267 in 2018. Charge-sheets were filed in 645 cases in 2018.

During the year, as many as 501 dowry-related killing cases reported. The number of such cases was 499 in 2017.  Charge-sheets were filed in 223 cases in 2018.

As many as 558 dacoity cases were filed in 2018 against 534 cases in the preceding year. As many as 2,125 robbery cases were filed in the year against 2,048 in 2017. As many as 3,713 burglary and 9,069 theft cases were registered in 2018. The figures were 3,953 and 9,083 in 2017, respectively.

The While Paper informed that 2,120 rioting cases were filed in 2018 while 2,407 such cases had been registered in 2017.

The motor vehicle accidents also rose in 2018 with 11,262 cases reported against 10,855 in the preceding year.

The report said there was no Maoist activity in six districts, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam and Mayurbhanj, in 2018. In other affected districts the situation was under control though the problem remained challenging in parts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Kandhamal and Nuapada districts.

It said that 54 LWE-related incidents, including 26 incidents of exchange of fire, were reported during the period. While 19 Maoists were killed, 39 Maoists were arrested and 27 surrendered to the police.

There was no terrorist activity in any part of the State during the year.

The report said that the State was by and large free from communal discord because of close attention on maintenance of communal peace and amity. Major fairs and festivals of different communities were observed peacefully. Only 34 Hindu-Muslim and five Hindu-Christian discords were marked in the year.

The report mentioned that while dacoits had took away a total of Rs 26,25,41,000 in different incidents during 2018, only Rs 6,95,36,000 was recovered by police. Looters snatched away a total of Rs 14,67,45,000 of which only Rs 4,54,61,000 were recovered. In looting cases, 1946 persons were arrested. Thieves looted away assets of Rs 52,22,82,000 of which only Rs 19.72 crore was recovered.
