Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns as Vice-President of India

New Delhi, July 21: In a major development,Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday resigned from his post with immediate effect citing health reasons.

In a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, the 74-year-old said that he was resigning “to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.

“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constituton,” Dhankhar said in his letter to the President.

Dhankhar had become the Vice President in August 2022. The five-year term would have ended in 2027.

The Vice President is also the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament.

In his resignation letter, Dhankhar expressed gratitude to the President for her “unwavering support” and described their working relationship as “soothing and wonderful.”

He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers for their cooperation, calling the Prime Minister’s support “invaluable.”

“The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished and embedded in my memory,” he wrote, reflecting on his tenure as Vice President.

Dhankhar also said it had been a privilege to witness India’s “remarkable economic progress” and “unprecedented exponential development” during his term.

He expressed “unwavering confidence” in the nation’s future, calling Bharat’s global rise “phenomenal.”
