Cyclone Fani death toll goes up to 43 in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The death toll caused due to the cyclone Fani has gone up to 43 in the State on Saturday as two more bodies were recovered in Cuttack and Khurda district, informed Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi here.

While highest 21 human casualty was reported in Puri, where the extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani made landfall on May 3 morning, six persons were killed in Cuttack followed by five in Khurda, four each in Mayurbhanj and Jajpur and three in Kendrapara districts.

According to the latest report of the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), at least 1,65,30,900 people in 18,168 villages in 159 blocks in 14 districts – Angul, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, DHenkanal, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Khurda, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh and Puri – were affected due to the cyclone, Fani, one of the rarest of the rare summer cyclones- the first to hit Odisha in 43 years.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured in the cyclonic storm.
