Bhubaneswar. Aug 20: Around
15,000 laptops would be distributed free of cost among the meritorious Plus II students
this year. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday launched the distribution
of laptops and felicitated college girls trained in self-defence.
Nearly 150 laptops were
distributed on Saturday at the Jaydev Bhavan here at a State-level function.
Notably in June this
year, after drawing criticism for inordinate delays in 2014 and 2015 in
distribution of free laptops to meritorious students who cleared the Plus II
examination, the State Government had announced that it would distribute
laptops among students who pass the examination in 2016 by September.
Gracing the occasion the
Chief Minister stressed on use of technology for development of the country.
“Development of a
country is impossible without technology. Hence, the laptops being given to meritorious
students under Biju Shasaktikaran Yojana will help the students to go
tech-savvy which is necessary for development,” said Patnaik.
Awarding the girl students
and trainers excelling in self-defence training Patnaik said this was part of
the Government’s effort to empower women under the State Youth Policy 2013.
“Self defence is a very
important component of women empowerment. Women and girl’s empowerment is a
very important issue and we are ensuring that recognition to ones who have
excelled in the field of self defence,” the Chief Minister said.
