Bhubaneswar, August 17, 2018: The Odisha Government has handed over as many as 814 Multipurpose Cyclone Shelters (MCS) and Multipurpose Flood Shelters (MFS) to Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water (PR&DW) Department for regular repair and maintenance.
After Super Cyclone 1999, it was decided to strengthen the structural and non-structural mitigation efforts towards reducing disaster risk and vulnerability. Hence, steps have been taken to construct MCS/ MFS in vulnerable areas of Odisha to provide safe shelter during natural disasters like cyclone and flood.
The Sate Executive Committee (SEC) constituted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, recently held a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi, where it was decided that the PR and DW Department, henceforth, would look after repair and maintenance works of all the 814 MCS and MFS.
Till now about 814 MCS and MFS have been constructed by Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA).
The MCS buildings constructed by OSDMA were extensively used during cyclone Phailin in 2013 providing shelter to the evacuated people.
Some of the shelter buildings were affected due to cyclone Phailin in 2013.
The repair work of such MCS buildings includes civil works, door and window, water supply, sanitation facilities, electricity installation and painting works.
