Focus on integrated disaster risk management

Bhubaneswar, August 28, 2018: The Odisha Government hosted a project inception meeting on operational systems for integrated disaster risk management for the State on Tuesday.

The Inception meeting aimed at orienting the participants about the integrated One-Stop Risk Management System at OSDMA, its process, methodology and the ways and means to strengthen OSDMA’s technical capacities through development of various Decision Support System (DSS) tools to carry out dynamic assessment of risk and real time dissemination of warnings, ensuring minimization of threat to life and property.

The meeting on “Operational Systems for Integrated Disaster Risk Management for Odisha” was inaugurated by Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) Commissioner-cum-Secretary and Managing Director Bishnupada Sethi here on Tuesday, in collaboration with Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES).

The meeting also covered topics like a) Project introduction b) Institutional landscaping c) Operational Challenges identification d) Data availability assessment e) Project implementation.

The project aims to develop Decision Support System (DSS) but not limited to hazards like heat wave, drought, lightning, road accidents, flood and tsunami.

Decisions like finalizing pilot districts, data collection strategy through close collaboration with line departments, and demarcating a roadmap for implementation of the project were also taken up at the meeting.

Present in the meeting were Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) Vice Chancellor and Head, Agromet Advisory Services, India Meteorological Department (IMD), New Delhi.

Participants from key departments, including Rural Development, Agriculture and FE, Commerce and Transport, Health and Family Welfare, Revenue and Disaster Management, Fishery and ARD, Forest and Environment; Institutions and Agencies like: Met Centre Bhubaneswar, ORSAC, OCAC, OUAT, IIT Bhubaneswar and officials from RIMES, Earth Networks, OSDMA and office of SRC, were also present.
