Landmine weighing 50 kg recovered in Gajapati

Gajapati: Barely 48-hours before the first phase of polling in Odisha’s four Lok Sabha seats and 28 Assembly constituencies on April 11, security forces on Tuesday recovered two landmines weighing 50 kg planted beneath a culvert on Adava-Paniganda route under Adava police station in Gajapati district, informed Gajapati SP Sara Sharma.

Acting on a specific tipoff, the security personnel rushed near to culvert on Adava-Paniganda route under Mohana block and recovered the two landmines weighing 25 kg each.

Sources said a bomb squad, which accompanied the security forces, immediately deactivated the landmine.

A major mishap seems to have been averted ahead of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

The SP said that an alert was sounded soon after the incident. The police have launched a massive combing operation in the area.

Elections will be held in the State in four phases starting April 11.
